He was good no dubt ...but ... became great because Philip was his predecessor

and , personally , I believe that Philip was THREE-TIMES-GREATER !!!!

From ZERO prepared it all for Alexander

..If he had lost from the Illyrians of the Dardanian Vardylis back in 358 BC
Alexander would of have been a King vassaled to the Illyrians !!!

«Much of the glory of great men like Perikles and Alexander is in fact merit of their predecessor's , respectively , Themistokles and Philip. They are the real creators of strength and thinkers of innovative ideas»
In this thread I would like to express my opinion that "if Alexander III is called ΜΕΓΑΣ (the great) then his father Philip II should be called ΤΡΙΣΜΕΓΙΣΤΟΣ (Three times Greatest) !!! What do you think ????

«ΜΗΔΕΠΟΤΕ ΤΗΝ ΕΥΡΩΠΗΝ ΕΝΗΝΟΧΕΝΑΙ ΑΝΔΡΑ ΠΑΡΑΠΑΝ ΟΙΟΝ ΤΟΝ ΑΜΥΝΤΟΥ ΦΙΛΙΠΠΟ»------------------------------------------(Theopompus , FGrH115,F27)----

"...never before Europe had a man of such value , like Philip the son of Amyntas."

Philip was a great statesman, a ruler blessed with ability and intelligence. He transformed a people of hill dwellers in one of the most efficient armies ever, unifying Greece.

But, Alexander did even more. He was the ultimate leader, he led his men with inordinate charisma towards something that was not even in Phillip's most hopeful dreams. He had by his side a lively and fierce disposition that made him a great warrior; a quick and sharp mind that let him understand in a moment the overall situation on the battlefield and take the right measures to change the outcome of the battle to his favour; he was educated by Aristotle, developing a curiosity for the world and a knowledge of men that proved useful in establishing relations with unknown people, when he went through the Indu-kush.
Finally, he had a dream of a so immense strength that gave him a force that involved everything beside him. How many other leaders in history could have had them followed by their soldiers were no Greek had been before, in place of enjoying the beauties of Babylonia or a return home as heroes and conquerers?

I do not dare to figure out what Philip could have done if he had not died before his time, leading the eastern campaing he had so well planned, I am no foreseer. I can just say that if he did an enterprise worthy of the mightiest of kings in transforming a people of shepherds into one of the strongest armies of the ancient world, surely Alexander done something worthy of perhaps a titan in leading them where no westerner had been before, against immeasureable odds.

I dedicated a lot of time to researching Philip so that I could as accurately as possible portray him in my book. Alexander was who he was because of his father. From the training, the education, the challenge, the inspiration and yes the conflict too, Alexander was Great because his father made sure his best qualities would manifest themselves. Philip is grossly under-rated by many historians but he could have been as successful if not more so than any of the caesars. Only Alexander could and did outdo him. Read my book boys (and girls). Plugs below.

The fact that Alexander, the greatest conqueror in world history, felt threatened by Philip's strength and success while he was living and even long after he died tells you plainly the worth of Philip II.
