Default Where are the academics hiding?

I was reading my 'In the Footsteps of Alexander' last night, a very good work by Michael Wood and realised he truely believes the Macedonians were greeks and constantly refers to the his troops as 'Greeks.' This man has spent his life following in the footsteps of Alexander and his world, but like other important contemporary experts of our hero, he seems to remain as silent as a monk of the issue of FYROM.

I think one of the major problems with this issue is FYROM aswell as stupid politicians, inertia on the part of many Greeks to the issue and the States, is infact, the current intellectuals from neutral nations who have made this subject their live's work remaining silent and frightened on FYROM.

I have to agree with you. Why have so many acedemics kept silent? Even a guy like Borza should be cringing at the thought of how his conclusions have been twisted. Otheracademics who have estab;lished the Greekness of Macedonia have said little to nothing to the best of my knowledge.

The academics are not hiding. There are a lot of huge works regarding the Macedonian history. The problem is the promotion of these works. And the promotion need money.

When I say promotion I mean

-Reprint of the old English essays and books
-Translation of the Greek books. E.g. If anyone read the Sfetas books regarding the modern Macedonian history he will find a lot of informations.Like Koliopoulos book.
-More web sources regarding the Macedonian history.

of course all the above needs money and unfortunely the Greek "Soros" doesnt care.

The crucial point with foreign eminent historians is that eventhough a percentage of them express doubts over the issue of ancient Macedonian Greekness, All of them disregard as blatantly false any connection between Skops and ancient Macedonians.

Borza, one of the 'heavy' weights in ancient Macedonian history that expresses doubts about the greekness of macedonians, had NO doubt at all that Skops are totally unrelated to ancient Macedonians. In one of his lectures in his university before his retirement, one of his students asked him if skops are connected with ancient macedonians and his reaction in front all of his students was to keep laughing for several minutes.

His views about Skops are expressed clearly in ' Macedonian Redux' and by his last Ph.D student Jeanne Reames-Zimmerman who has replaced him in the university.

Quote:
The *modern* Macedonian language is very close to Western Bulgarian and is, of course, Slavic. No Slavs entered the area of Macedonia for several centuries after the fall of the Macedonian kingdom/empire. Thus, the *modern* Macedonian language has nothing to do with the ancient. So, while I might argue it may not be Greek, I'd most certainly say it's not Slavic.

Just wanted to be sure there was no confusion between the *modern* Macedonians and the ancient Macedonians. Different people; same geographic area

Already this Borza sounds wrong, I have read threads on this forum showing the direct relation between what the Macedonians spoke and other Greeks at the time - I also read that FYROM is only partially situated in Ancient Macedon.

Reaper you are correct about what you hear.

It is only around 20% of FYROM that lays(now understand this) within the borders of Ancient Macedonia AFTER EXPANSION UNDER PHILIP.

If you talk about the original homeland of the Ancient Macedonians on the North Slopes of Mt Olympus then NONE OF FYROM LAYS WITHIN ITS BORDERS.

I just have to say I am very happy we have Reaper and Partan back here with us. Spartan you are right, the most liberal estimate I heard was 25%, but I trust you, the figures are close enough.
