No U.S Security Guarantee for the FYR Macedonia The above link is an article by Sam Vaknin from the American Chronicle regarding the U.S's announcement of its intention to sign a security agreement with FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) in wake of its failed bid to join NATO as result of Greece's blocking that bid. The security has been touted by much of the FYROM press and Slav Macedonian bloggers as being "better than any NATO membership". Vaknin rejects this view and is sceptical of the significance of the particular agreement to be signed. An interesting point is that even Serbia currently has an agreement with the U.S of the same type. |

Hello Skopje: Who told you the road to NATO always runs through Washington? The above link is an article by Haps Borgen of neurope.com. Borgen analyses the attitude of the U.S towards the Macedonian naming dispute in relation to the bid by the FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia) to join NATO. The article examines the diplomatic failure of the U.S to garner support amongst the NATO allies for pressuring Greece to desist from blocking FYROM's bid. The article also includes the below transcript of a 1944 U.S State Department airgram which perhaps points to the hypocrisy, historically speaking of the U.S approach to today's Macedonian issue. U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT Foreign Relations Vol. VIII, 868.014 / 26 Dec. 1944 "The Department has noted increasing propaganda rumors and semi-official statements in favor of an autonomous Macedonia, emanating principally from Bulgaria, but also from YugoslavPartisan and other sources, with the implication that Greek territory would be included in the projected state. This Government (of USA) considers talk of Macedonian "nation", Macedonian "Fatherland", or Macedonian "national consciousness" to be unjustified demagoguery representing no ethnic, nor political reality, and sees in its present revival a possible cloak for aggressive intentions against Greece. The approved policy of this Government is to oppose any revival of the Macedonian issue as related to Greece. The Greek section of Macedonia is largely inhabited by Greeks, and the Greek people are almost unanimously opposed to the creation of a Macedonian state. Allegations of serious Greek participation in any such agitation can be assumed to be false. This Government (of USA) would regard as responsible any Government or group of Gonernments tolerating or encouraging menacing or aggressive acts of "Macedonian forces" against Greece".
